UK to enforce emergency budget cuts

June 22, 2010 — Britain's new coalition government has announced the country's toughest cut to public spending in a generation to reign in record debts estimating up $228 billion.

George Osborne, the UK finance minister, says the budget aims to "balance the books" within five years by imposing an increase in sales tax on goods and services from 17.5 per cent to 20 per cent at the start of next year.

Public sector pay will be frozen for two years while a number of welfare benefits will also experience a cut in spending.

Al Jazeera's Hamish McDonald reports on how plans could initially slow economic growth, a point that the United States, the world's biggest economy, has urged countries to avoid.
