Is Obama too weak to make peace in the Middle East

The Doha Debate April 26 2010

TIM SEBASTIAN

Ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening to you and welcome to the latest in our series of Doha debates, coming to you from the Gulf State of Qatar and sponsored by The Qatar Foundation. We've seen decades of American engagement in the Middle East, and when Barack Obama took over The White House a surge of hope, that this youthful, dynamic new leader, might succeed where his predecessors had failed. Last June, with the world still enthralled by him, he told an audience in Cairo that Israel's settlements had to stop, and that the situation for Palestinians was intolerable. Since then Israel has rejected his call, the building work in the settlements goes on and it's the talking that's come to a halt. So, did Mr. Obama dangerously overestimate his powers of persuasion? Or has he had too many other crises, both foreign and domestic, that have blunted his focus on the Middle East? Our motion tonight examines the state of his authority: ‘This house believes that Barack Obama is too weak to make peace in the Middle East'. Your decision, as ever, but before you make it we have an influential panel who will speak on the issue from very different standpoints. Speaking for the motion, Ahmad Moussalli, he's professor at the Department of Political Studies and Public Administration at the American University of Beirut. He specialises in contemporary Islamic movements, political Islam and East-West relations. Also for the motion, Philip Weiss, an investigative reporter who has worked for many years in mainstream US journalism, he's also founder of the website MondoWeiss, that focuses on Israel, Palestine and on Jewish identity issues. Against the motion, Roger Cohen, best known as a columnist for The New York Times and an author. He joined the paper 20 years ago, and since then has been both a correspondent and foreign editor. And with him Sami Abu Roza, a former political advisor in the office of the Palestinian President. He was involved in presenting the Palestinian case against the West Bank barrier to the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Ladies and gentlemen, our panel. So now let me first call on Ahmad Moussalli to speak for the motion.

Portugal The next in line for a debt crisis?

Alongside Greece, Portugal is an uncertain prospect within the EU. As the country's budget deficit continues to rise at a rapid rate, more and more investors are doubting Portugal's credit-worthiness.The government of José Socrates now plans to cut jobs in the public sector and freeze wages. Just like the Greeks, the Portuguese have also taken to the streets in angry protest at all austerity measures. Incomes in Portugal are way below the EU average in any case. The country is poor, many towns are falling into disrepair, and people say they are Europe's losers.

Scary! Massive waves on huge road bridge send Volgograd drivers asphalt surfing

May 21, 2010Motorists using a bridge in the southern Russian city of Volgograd were given the ride of a lifetime by a powerful gust of wind. The new river crossing started shaking violently and a massive downpour at the same time made conditions worse. Drivers say their cars were literally thrown into the air, many thinking it was an unexpected earthquake. The shaking was so severe it caused vehicles to career into the opposite lane creating chaos. Local authorities claim the shaking of the bridge was possibly caused by an earthquake. Seismologists, however, say this is highly unlikely. Meanwhile, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an investigation into the bridge's safety and construction history.

The bridge across Volga river is 1260 meters long and 32 meters wide. It was opened less than a year ago in October 2009.

Will The Euro survive this crisis ?

Economists argue about The Sinking Euro

Three "respected" economists argue about the sinking Euro currency, and how they all agree that Europe will pull it out of the mess it's in. It will not do so, it is a political project, and the markets see the political problems in Europe, and are having a go at the Euro. There is no political will to sink limitless amounts of money to prop up a failed currency.

Air India Crash - 8 Survivors

Around a hundred and sixty people are feared dead after a plane crash in southern India. It happened when an Air India flight arriving from Dubai crash-landed near Mangalore airport and caught fire. So far about eighty bodies have been recovered. Many of the dead were still strapped into their seats. A spokesman for the airline says eight people have survived and have been taken to hospital. Officials say conditions at the airport were poor.
AssociatedPress — May 22, 2010 — As many as 160 people were feared dead in India on Saturday after an Air India Express plane arriving from Dubai crashed and burst into flames at dawn as it overshot a runway in the south of the country while trying to land in the rain. (May 22)
